Gilberts, IL (Population 9,075) is seeking an experienced and adaptable law enforcement professional with the ability to provide a contemporary approach to policing to serve as the community’s next Chief of Police. The ideal candidate will have an inclusive managerial style, as well as clear, concise, and open communication skills. The Village desires a forward-thinking leader with a track record of implementing modern policing strategies and a stellar reputation for being open-minded, respectful of different viewpoints, and effectively collaborate with stakeholders. The Chief of Police plays an instrumental role in the quality of life for residents in and around the Village of Gilberts with emphasis on community engagement and enforcement of the laws and ordinances.
The Village of Gilberts was incorporated in 1890 and is located in Kane County, Illinois. The Village is governed by a President and Board of Trustees. The Village's policies are set by the Village President and the Village Board. The Village Administrator is responsible for implementing the policies and directives of the Village President and the Village Board. The Chief of Police is appointed by the Village President with consent from the Village Board and reports to and is evaluated by the Village Administrator.
The Gilberts Police Department strives to provide the highest quality professional police services in partnership with the community. Department members are entrusted to consistently provide courteous service to citizens at all times and find ways to affirmatively promote, preserve, and deliver a feeling of safety and security while providing service and problem resolution for all people within the Village of Gilberts. The Police Department includes 21 full and part-time sworn positions along with one civilian employee. Telecommunications services are provided by Kane County Emergency Communications (KaneComm), an area-wide consolidated dispatch service located in Geneva, IL.

The Gilberts Police Officers have been represented by the Metropolitan Alliance of Police, Chapter 423, since 2005. The most recent contract expired April 30th, 2026. Negotiations for a successor collective bargaining agreement are anticipated during the next Chief’s tenure.

- Be experienced with employee labor relations and contract negotiations.
- Demonstrate sound financial acumen and a clear understanding of resources.
Candidates should possess the skills, experience, and professional record necessary to successfully perform the responsibilities of a senior law enforcement executive. An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will also be considered. Qualified candidates should possess the following:
- 15 years of service in law enforcement, including five years of supervisory and/or administrative service experience at a command level in a full-time, paid police department.
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is desirable; coursework in public administration, business, finance, criminal justice, or a related field is preferred. A master's degree is highly desirable.
- Leadership training such as the F.B.I. National Academy, Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, Police Executive Research Forum Senior Management Institute for Police, or similar programs is required.
- Successful candidates will possess or be able to obtain a valid Illinois driver’s license. They will be certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board or be eligible for such certification.
The anticipated hiring salary is $165,000; final salary is dependent upon qualifications, experience, and record of achievement. A comprehensive benefits package includes participation in a defined benefit pension fund (if candidate is eligible), a defined contribution plan, health insurance including medical, dental, and vision coverage (also available to dependents), flexible spending account (medical, dependent care), and life insurance. The Village also offers a generous leave package including paid vacation days, holidays, and paid time off (PTO). The Village will be flexible in determining the number of annual vacation days for the selected candidate. Additionally, a vehicle, cell phone, and a $650.00 per year uniform allowance will be provided. The Village does not have a residency requirement.
