- Dealership Controller for Multi Franchise Regional Automotive Group
Description
We are seeking an experienced Automotive Dealer Controller to oversee the financial operations of a multi-franchise regional automotive group with four high-performing automotive dealerships in the Midwest. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, and disciplined operational accounting at the store and group level. The ideal candidate will be hands-on, detail-oriented, and comfortable partnering closely with ownership and dealership management to drive profitability, compliance, and long-term stability in a privately held, values-driven organization.

Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all dealership accounting functions, including general ledger, payables, receivables, payroll, and month-end and year-end close across all stores
- Prepare, review, and analyze monthly financial statements, factory financials, and management reports for accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to OEM and GAAP standards
- Develop, monitor, and manage budgets, forecasts, and financial performance metrics at both the dealership and group level
- Manage cash flow, floorplan and inventory financing, and ensure proper reconciliation of vehicle, parts, and service accounting
- Ensure timely and accurate submission of all OEM, lender, manufacturer, and regulatory reporting
- Implement, maintain, and improve internal controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard assets and ensure compliance
- Optimize utilization of DMS/accounting systems (e.g., CDK, Reynolds & Reynolds, or similar) and standardize processes across locations
- Partner with General Managers and department leaders to understand store performance, identify opportunities, and support data-driven decision making
- Lead, train, and develop accounting office staff, fostering a culture of accuracy, accountability, and continuous improvement
- Coordinate with external CPA firms, banks, and other partners on audits, tax filings, and financial reviews
Preferred Qualifications
- Proven experience as a Dealer Controller or senior accounting leader in an automotive dealership environment (multi-store experience strongly preferred)
- In-depth knowledge of automotive dealership accounting, including F&I, OEM programs, floorplan, parts and service, and warranty accounting
- Strong understanding of GAAP and dealership financial statement structure (including manufacturer financial statements)
- Experience with major DMS platforms (e.g., CDK, Reynolds & Reynolds, Dealertrack, Tekion, etc.) and related accounting/reporting tools
- CPA, CMA, or relevant advanced degree preferred, but equivalent dealership controller experience will be strongly considered
- Hands-on, collaborative leader with excellent communication skills and the ability to work closely with ownership, GMs, and department managers
- High level of integrity, confidentiality, and professionalism
